Mission Beach is definitely a hot spot to visit for apartment-ites in San Diego, from the north end where you'll find a huge roller coaster and midway rides, to the south end where an artificial reef has been created with sunken ships for divers and snorkelers to explore.

Along the entire beach line are plenty of walking, rollerblading and bicycling sidewalks, with several locations to rent your rollers. Picnic tables

on grassy areas with a few trees for shade provide a great place for a weekend escape to read, play and eat. Public restrooms are available, and lifeguards are interspersed throughout the coastline. Alcohol is not allowed to be consumed on the beach.

Inhabitants of the beach area definitely take on the flare of freedom with the "goth" look to the preppy, and from the hip hop to the dread locks. Arrive early when exploring this area, for parking is limited, especially during peak summer season. And make sure that if you park on the street you're not in a towing zone.

The interior land of the coastline is dotted with original bungalows and tiny homes where that raggedy red beach umbrella and pink polka dot lawn chair is accepted and welcomed. An original settlement of San Diego because of the draw to the ocean, much of it looks original to the early 20th century in terms of architecture.

Plenty of shopping for tattoos or henna, funky clothing and furniture is available. Restaurants dotting the main drag and side streets feature burgers and beer, Asian food, pizza, coffee drinks and healthy smoothies.

South Mission Beach Park offers a place to cast your fishing line, with tackle and bait shops right on the pier. Here, you can watch boats, large and small, pass through the Harbor Channel that delivers and takes goods to and from San Diego.
